What is the EAMSC?

The East Asian Medical Students’ Conference, more fondly known as EAMSC, began with an inspiration to participate in activities that aim to resolute or ameliorate healthcare problems through a network of medical students studying in East Asia. Nowadays, it is an inimitable opportunity for the East Asian medical students to exchange ideas, knowledge and cultural understandings with their counterparts in other parts of Asia, Oceania and beyond.

It is an annual conference with the majority of the delegates from across East Asia. Every year, the Organising Committee of the Conference would arrange for a 5 day itinerary packed with academic and cultural activities surrounding a chosen theme. Year after year, EAMSC continue to inspire medical students to examine international health issues closely, evaluate the role of a medical student in promotion of public health and to think beyond the scope of classroom knowledge.

Back in 1987, during the 8th Asian Medical Students’ Conference in Malaysia, delegates from Taiwan and Korea agreed about the need for more specialized conference between the two countries. The former name for EAMSC as “Korea-China medical students’ conference” (also known as the ”Sino-Korea Medical Students’ Conference”). Japan and Hong Kong had not joined this conference yet. The conference is always held in late January or early February.

And in 1988, the 1st conference was held in Korea under the theme of “The Present Status and Future of Medical Service in Asia”. By 1994, when the fifteenth AMSC was held in Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan decided to participate in the next EAMSC. Due to the participation of Hong Kong and Japan, the conference decided to change its name to East Asia Medical Students Conference.

In 2002, the Philippines was the sponsor of EAMSC. By that time, the conference was participated by all members of AMSA, who come from places all over Asia and Oceania.

The various themes that were explored in past conferences are as listed below:

The theme for the latest conference; the 21^st EAMSC held in 2008 in Thailand was “Alcohol, Medical & Social Aspects” (a.k.a. AMSA).

Most of the articles in the symposium are related to East Asian Regions. For example, in past years’ conferences, there were papers discussing about the current mortality pattern in Hongkong and Korea, the Anti tumor effect of Ginseng, Current Health Seeking Behavior in Korea, The Evolution of the Social Status of Physicians in Taiwan, and so on.

The EAMSC is composed of member states of the AMSA (Asian Medical Students’ Association) and for this cause, it also has a conference anthem, ”See The World in Perfect Harmony”, same as the AMSA song. There is neither a permanent President nor a Secretary General, only a chairman for the conference and a chairman for the working committee. The contact work is done by four RCs (Regional Coordinators) from different countries. During each conference delegates are divided into different groups and there are guides from the working committee to get everybody to know each other well and to become their tour guide in the city.

Keynote Speaker

Dato’ Professor Dr Tan Hui-Meng’s career has taken him through 24 years of study, research, teaching and administration in Medicine following his graduation with an MBBS from the University of Malaya in 1980.

He was conferred a fellowship in surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) and the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians (Glasgow) in 1985. Further fellowships in Endourology from the USA and in Germany quickly followed suit in 1987 and 1988 respectively.

Dato’ Professor Dr Tan Hui-Meng was conferred the Darjah Kebesaran Dato’ Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (DSSA) by HRH The Sultan of Selangor, Malaysia in 1996 and served as Urologist to His Royal Highness. The King of Malaysia from 1999 to 2001 and currently dedicates his time to his patients as a Consultant Urologist at the Subang Jaya Medical Center and Megah Medical Specialist Centre. He is also Adjunct Professor at the Medical Faculty, University of Malaya.

Having over two decades of innovatively developing medical practice in the field of Urology, Dato’ Professor Dr Tan Hui-Meng has long been fascinated with emerging technologies for Malaysians. He is a pioneer in the use of Extracoporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy, Percutaneous Surgery, Urethral Implants, Penile Prosthesis and Incontinence Implants. Dato’ Professor Tan is also the leader researches and studies in the field of Urolithiasis, Andrology and Men’s Health, which extends into prostatic diseases, erectile dysfunction and hormonal changes in the aging male.

Dato’ Professor Dr Tan Hui-Meng is a member of 18 learned societies and is currently the President of the Malaysian Society of Andrology and The Study of the Aging Male, Chairman of the Asia Pacific Council for the Study of the Aging Male and the Malaysian Erectile Dysfunction advisory Council and Training. He is also the Vice-President of The Asian Society of Endourology, a society dedicated to upgrading the skills of endourology in Asia. He is a scientific committee member of the WHO panel for consultations in Sexual and Erectile Dysfunction and was also the President of the 6th Biennial Asia Pacific Society of Impotence Research Meeting and also for the 1st Asian International Society for the Study of the Aging Male.

Dato’ Professor Tan has presented 98 papers in all at local, international and world Conferences. He was invited to present his pioneering work and extensive work on percutaneous surgery for staghorn stone in the 16th World Congress of Endourology. His lecture paper for the 4th Asian Congress of Urology held in Singapore on PCNL Research won best paper in Asia.

Dato’ Professor Dr Tan Hui-Meng is published in 158 peer-reviewed journals and books, including 7 books on Erectile Dysfunction and Men’s Health. He sits on the editorial boards of 9 journals including the International Journal of Impotence Research, Journal of Sexual Dysfunction, Journal of Sexual and Reproductive Medicine and the Asian Journal of Andrology. Dato’ Professor Dr Tan Hui-Meng is the inaugural editor-in-chief of Men’s Health, an international peer reviewed journal focusing on medical perspective in Men’s Health and the Aging Male. In the community level, Dato’ Professor Tan is the chairman for the Panel on Aging and Health, which contribute educational articles fortnightly to the ‘Age Well’ column in The Star newspaper.

Activities

Group discussions

We adopt the problem-based learning style (PBL) to stimulate group discussions, in which participants will be discussing about the pre-conference triggers. This not only enables delegates to assimilate ideas and knowledge from every nation, but also fosters mutual understanding among them.

Paper presentation
EAMSC 2010 is a scientific and community-based conference, in which each country must submit its research paper to the committee. The research paper includes risk factors, solutions, strategies and also the role of medical students in promoting men’s health. Shortlisted research papers will then have the opportunity to be presented during this conference whereby prizes will be awarded to the top three research papers.

Site visits
Delegates will be brought to specific institutes, which play significant roles in promoting men’s health in Malaysia. The sites are selected based on four subthemes; namely, risky behaviours, chronic diseases, sexual and reproductive health and rehabilitation. It allows the delegates to witness the effort of developing men’s health in Malaysia and to gain new insights.

Community service
“Actions speak louder than words”. Community services are held to expose the delegates to the community and to apply their knowledge into practice.

Poster presentation
As part of our effort to promote public health awareness, each country will be designing two informative posters to be presented during the conference. Prizes are awarded to the top three posters.

Cultural workshops
This is the time for delegates to experience hands-on the uniqueness of the Malaysian culture. Activities such as batik-painting, weaving, traditional dances and games will be conducted. There are also opportunities to try on our unique and beautifully crafted traditional costumes and savour our local fruits and delights.

Cultural night
Held annually, it is a night for all the delegates to showcase their unique culture and talent to their friends from other countries. It will be a night of cultural exchange and new experiences.

Sightseeing

Delegates will have opportunities to visit Malaysia’s famous landmarks such as KL Tower, Petronas KLCC, Putrajaya, Golden Triangle, Petaling Street and Masjid India.

Objectives
1. To understand the status of men’s health in each country.
2. To identify the risk factors affecting men’s health within different countries.
3. To discover the strategies adopted to improve the health of men.
4. To explore the role of medical students as community leaders in promoting men’s health.

Poster Presentation

1. To generate awareness and educate the public, especially men about the main disease(s) afflicting the male population in each country.
2. To engage participation and cooperation from both genders on prevention and risk reduction of the diseases affecting male predominantly.
3. To raise the profile of men’s health at a world-wide level and within individual countries.

II) Scientific Poster

Defining the Past, Refining the Future

While women and child health issues have been receiving much attention throughout the past few decades, men’s health development has just only begun. However, collaborations that advocate interest beyond men’s traditional clinical concern such as erectile dysfunction remain fairly lacking. Among the few initiatives undertaken by medical professionals are the Third Japan-ASEAN Men’s Health Conference 2008 in Singapore and national policies formation regarding men’s health by certain countries such as Australia.

It is a well-proven fact with Tom Perls, founder of the New England Centenarian Study at Boston University stating that across the industrialized world, women still live 5 to 10 years longer than men and that among people over 100 years old, 85% are women.

In Malaysia, the sex ratio for those aged 65 and above is only 0.78 (male: female). While it could be attributed to biological factors, it cannot be denied that external factors such as lifestyle and environment can influence men’s health. Unlike women and children, men do not pay much attention to health. This is evidenced by a survey from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) discovered that almost a third of men under 40 do nothing about bad health in the hope that illness will "go away".

In line with that, AMSA Malaysia decided to choose Men’s Health as the theme of the 23rd East Asian Medical Students’ Conference 2010. We would like to take advantage of the various participating countries in this conference and explore the reasons why men’s health receive lesser share of medical attention and ways to set new trends in the region by bringing the matter to light. The 23rd EAMSC would also like to address issues that play the role in determining men’s health and at the same time, promote men’s health.

We hope to initiate a good momentum of men’s health awareness in participating countries well before the conference through research papers conducted by medical students which the results will be presented during the conference. Studies will be conducted to understand different countries’ health policies and indicators regarding men’s health. Focused discussion will then be held to stimulate ways to improve men’s health during the conference.

Besides, we would like to recognize the strength of medical students from the region in shaping the future of medicine. Thus, community outreach programmes are created to empower these aspiring doctors into acknowledging their social responsibility and believing that they help create a sustainable change in the community they are living.

Through this conference, we are taking the opportunity that aspiring doctors from Asia Pacific region are uniting in Malaysia to change the scene of men’s health not only in Malaysia but beyond, for the future. This is in hope of sending a message to the public advocating for a more prosperous collaboration for the betterment of men’s health.

AMSA was officially founded in Manilla, Philippines in 1985 and from this day has been an active, dynamic and exciting student-led, not-for-profit, non-political organisation.

Today, with members and friends spanning the globe AMSA has an active student-exchange program, regularly undertakes national and regional projects, provides humanitarian assistance at times of need, produces quarterly student publications and liaises with the World Health Organisation, Association Of South-East Asia Nations (ASEAN), the Association of Medical Doctors of Asia (AMDA) and many other international and regional medical student organisations.

Since it was first established in 1979 and the first conference was held in Mahidol University of Thailand, the Asian Medical Students’ Conferences have been a key focus for the organisation. Now held biannually in January/February and July/August these events see over 700 students from across the world combine to learn from each other, teach their fellow peers and develop lasting friendships.
